Ochota Barrels

The Ochota Barrels tale began on a surf trip in late 2000 along the Mexican west coast. Taras and Amber Ochota were wrapping up a trip through some of the world’s best wine and surf regions, and landed in Mexico in a Volkswagen camper van. It was while relaxing in Mexico they conceived the idea to make super premium wines back home in South Australia, with a concentration on Mclaren Vale (Grenache) and the Barossa Valley (Shiraz).  They eventually found an exceptional old vineyard site in each region. Seasoned French oak is used for the Grenache where the Shiraz benefits from a little new wood. Bottling decisions are not made for a set release date or for replenishing sold out allocations, but as in every step of Ochota Barrels’ craft, it is by taste, texture and emotion. Each bottle is unfined, unfiltered, hand labeled, hand numbered and hand packaged.

Ochota Barrels is available in Calgary exclusively at Metrovino

Luke Lambert

luke lambertOne of the first things you notice about Luke Lambert’s website is the constant stream of ‘sold out’ notes on his wines.  They’re popular and coveted the world over, and only a few select stores and importers get their hands on them. We’re one of them. A younger, hipper winery located in New Zealand, Luke Lambert is known for going against the grain and doing things his own way.  Lambert’s wines are handpicked and of single-vineyard origin and he prefers to make his wines the old fashioned way, rather than relying too much on technology; you’ll find him and his crew basket pressing wines, hand plunging, and using gravity, rather than pumps. Lambert has said that the best wines are made by feel, and once you have a chance to try them, you’ll no doubt agree. Luke Lambert is available at Metrovino.

Wild Duck Creek

Wild Duck Creek is a small family-run winery west of Heathcote, alongside the Wild Duck Creek. David (aka ‘Duck’) was first turned on to wine at the influential age of 13, after “borrowing” his father’s flagon.  Years later Duck and Diana planted the first vines (in 1974 and in 1979) and named the first vineyard Alan’s Cabernet Vineyard, after Duck’s late father Alan. Those first plantings were Cabernet Sauvignon, but according to the winery, “due to somewhat amateur site selection, they passed away in 1975.” Fortunately the family has gained knowledge and expertise since then and is now known for gorgeous wines.

Wild Duck Creek is available exclusively at J Webb Wine Merchant in Calgary.
