The best wines of Puglia take you on a journey to the past. Nearly forgotten grapes such as negroamaro and susumaniello deliver authentic tastes of this ancient windswept land, with the Adriatic Sea to the north and the Ionian Sea to the south. These wines embody centuries old (possibly millennia old) traditions; a near-complete departure from modern winemaking. Drinking these may cause spontaneous plane ticket purchases, especially if you drink while staring at photos of Vallone’s far-too-beautiful-to-be-real estates, such as Vallone’s Castelserranova estate, surrounded by the 15th century Serranova Castle near the town of Carovigno on the Adriatic Sea. This estate, one of three belonging to the Vallone family, also grows olives, artichokes and other crops. If only we could get our hands on those too!

We are extremely proud to offer the distinct wines of the D’Angelo estate with their wonderful expressions of Aglianico. Introduced to Italy by the Greeks, Aglianico has been grown in the regions of Basilicata and Campania in southern Italy for centuries. Some call it the Barolo of the south and is often overlooked next to the great wines of the north such as Barbaresco and Brunello di Montelcino. It is slow-growing and a late ripener, perfectly adapted to the terroir of Basilicata. With its volcanic soil, hilly terrain and large temperature fluctuation between day and night, the region acquired DOC status in 1972. The best sites for aglianico are on the slopes of the extinct volcano Mount Vulture around the town of Rionero, where D’Angelo is situated. The estate has been identified with the grape for over a century and continues to be Aglianico Del Vulture’s top producer. For D’Angelo, quality starts in the vineyard. With 40 hectares under vine, D’Angelo continually produces well-structured wines with notes of earth, tar, chocolate, and strong berry overtones. Great value and an excellent addition to any cellar!

Established in the 1750s by winemaker Pietro di Mastro Berardino, Mastroberardino is Campania’s most renowned winery. Pietro was awarded the professional title of ‘Mastro’ as testament to his skill in quality winemaking, a tradition that continued uninterrupted for 10 generations and lives on to this day. Located in the town of Altripalda, the Mastroberardino family’s holdings are spread across several parts of Irpinia, in areas that have historically proved to be the region’s center of great-wine production. Today, Mastroberardino is universally acknowledged to have been the most important guardian of the viticultural and oenological heritage of the Roman age. Under the patronage of the “Presidenza della Repubblica,” the winery has been appointed to reintroduce vine growing in the ancient city of Pompeii. The family-based firm has long championed the indigenous varieties of Campania: Aglianico, Falanghina, Fianco, Piedirosso, Greco and Coda di Volpe.
